Former Northumbria Police officer convicted of sexual assault

A former Northumbria Police officer has been given a suspended jail sentence for sexually assaulting a woman following an investigation directed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The investigation, carried out by Durham Constabulary and Northumbria Police’s Professional Standards Department under the IOPC’s direction and control, began after two women reported they were touched inappropriately by PC Daniel Hedley.

He was arrested in March 2023, and the matter was referred to the IOPC. We directed the forces’ investigation and after reviewing the investigator’s report, we authorised a referral to the Crown Prosecution Service, which issued charges in the summer of 2024.

Following a trial at Teesside Crown Court, in July he was convicted of one count of sexual assault, relating to an incident in January 2023 in which he touched a woman’s bottom. He was found not guilty of three further charges of sexual assault.

Former PC Hedley was today (Monday 21 September) sentenced to 32 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months. He must also undertake a rehabilitation course and was given a 10-year restraining order. He was also instructed to carry out 120 hours unpaid work and will be subject to a three-month curfew and a 10-year sex offender notification requirement.

IOPC Director of Engagement Emily Barry said:

“Former PC Hedley abused his position, inappropriately touching a woman who said she felt intimidated by his role as a police officer.

“His behaviour was inexcusable and a complete betrayal of his oath to act with integrity and prevent crime.

“Thanks to the bravery of those who came forward, and the swift actions of Northumbria Police and Durham Constabulary once they were aware of the concerns about his behaviour, he has now been held accountable. This sends a clear message that reports like these will be taken seriously and officers who abuse their position will be dealt with robustly.”

On conclusion of the investigation, we found former PC Hedley had a case to answer for gross misconduct in relation to alleged inappropriate contact with or comments towards three people who gave evidence as part of the investigation. It will now be for Northumbria Police to arrange disciplinary proceedings.

PC Hedley was previously dismissed from the force in 2024 after pleading guilty to possessing an offensive weapon, which was unrelated to this investigation.
