The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation after a man died on a railway line following a traffic pursuit by Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officers.

We understand that shortly after midnight on Tuesday, 20 April, MPS officers were involved in the pursuit of a black Audi in the Twickenham area.

At around 12.15am, the driver of the Audi, a man in his 30s, got out of the car in the area of Maswell Park Road, Hounslow, and his body was found on a railway line nearby a short time later. The man’s relatives have been notified and a post-mortem will take place in due course.

IOPC Regional Director Sal Naseem said:

“My thoughts are with the man’s family and friends, and those officers involved in this tragic incident.

“We are making contact with the man’s family to provide them with support and to explain our role investigating the circumstances leading up to his death.

“We sent our investigators to the scene and to the post incident procedures to begin gathering evidence.

“When someone dies following police contact, it is mandatory for forces to make a referral to the IOPC. Our role is to establish the circumstances of the incident and this work is already under way.”
