The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has informed a Merseyside Police officer they are under criminal investigation following a collision on the M53 that left a man in a critical condition.

We are independently investigating the circumstances of the collision, which happened on the motorway slip road at junction two on 22 March.

A motorbike, which was being tracked by a police helicopter at the time, was travelling the wrong way along the hard shoulder when it was involved in a head on collision with a police vehicle.

Having reviewed the evidence currently available, we have notified the driver of the police vehicle they are being investigated for the potential offence of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. They are also under investigation for possible gross misconduct in relation to the manner of their driving.

IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said:

“This was a very serious incident which left a man in a critical condition in hospital. I am relieved to hear his condition has improved. However, he will continue to undergo treatment for his injuries.

“Given the circumstances, it is important for there to be a thorough and independent investigation so that we can fully understand events leading up to the collision.

“It is important to remember that serving notice on an officer does not necessarily mean that criminal or disciplinary proceedings will follow. On conclusion of the investigation, we will decide whether to refer the case to the Crown Prosecution Service, or if misconduct proceedings are required.”

In addition to gathering footage of the incident, we have obtained a detailed statement from a police witness and have approached a number of members of the public who we believe may have witnessed the collision and may be able to assist with our enquiries.
