Our investigators have named the man who was shot by police in Westminster on Sunday 8 March 2020 as Hassan Yahya, 30.

The next of kin of Mr Yahya have been informed.

We continue to independently investigate his death in Northumberland Avenue, following an incident that started at around 11.30pm on the South Bank. We believe Mr Yahya then ran over Hungerford Bridge and into Northumberland Avenue where he was shot by City of London Police who had responded to an emergency call in an Armed Response Vehicle.

Our investigators attended the scene of the shooting and the police post-incident procedure. They have obtained accounts from officers on the scene and gathered CCTV and Body Worn Video footage.

The investigation is at an early stage and we are still gathering information. The Coroner has been informed, a post-mortem examination carried out and we are awaiting the results. An inquest date has yet to be set.

IOPC Regional Director Sal Naseem said: “My thoughts remain with Mr Yahya’s family and all those affected by this loss. It’s important we establish exactly what happened. We’ve already gathered a substantial amount of evidence - including CCTV and officers’ body worn video - which will be carefully analysed by our investigators.”
